Coffee disadvantages
Coffee is a beverage which inspires fierce loyalty in its devotees, many of whom are quick to point to all of recent studies touting the many health benefits of drinking coffee. While there has been an increase in data recently emphasizing some of the positive aspects of coffee, it is important to note that there can be some disadvantages to drinking coffee as well.
The caffeine in coffee can cause an increase in blood pressure, and those individuals who suffer from hypertension may need to limit their coffee intake. In some cases, people who were infrequent coffee drinkers have experienced a sudden spike in blood pressure upon consuming coffee, which has led to temporary episodes of feeling shaky and jittery.
For those people who drink unfiltered coffee, such as coffee prepared in a French press, an increase in cholesterol levels has been found. This is due to a compound in coffee known as cafestol, which increases the levels of LDL cholesterol in the human body. Coffee which is filtered during the brewing process has much lower levels of cafestol and is not considered a factor in contributing to high cholesterol.
There have been some studies linking coffee to infertility in men. Coffee is also not recommended for women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, so couples trying to conceive should limit their coffee intake.
Whether you are a one cup per day person, or someone who drinks coffee all day long, it is always good to be informed.
