Flavored coffee calories

Coffee lovers have been adding flavor to their coffee for hundreds of years. Originally, nuts and berries were utilized to add different flavor variations to the brewed coffee, but today it is possible to add flavor directly to the beans. Many of these added flavors have enticing names such as chocolate truffle, vanilla cream, or caramel crème, but are they as fattening as they sound?

If you are making brewed coffee from beans which have been flavored, the calorie count is essentially the same as in black coffee, about two calories per cup. Flavor is usually added to the beans after roasting, and is generally a combination of natural and synthetic flavors. Since flavored coffee beans are simply coffee beans which have been infused with compounds which add flavor, there are no additional calories.

Some flavored coffees sold in restaurants and coffee shops these days are made by adding a flavored shot to already brewed coffee. In these cases, the flavored coffee would have more calories than black coffee. Most of the flavored shots are full of sugar, and some can greatly increase the calorie count of your coffee. In addition, any flavored coffee drinks which are made from instant mixes tend to have far more calories than what is found in regular brewed coffee.

If you love flavored coffee but are concerned about calories, look for coffee that has been made from flavored beans and stay away from any coffee flavored with shots after brewing, or any kind of instant flavored coffee
