Coffee types

There are so many different types of coffee available around the world; it can be hard to know where to start. There are two main types of beans, Arabica and Robusta, and from these beans an amazing variety of brews are created.

Each type of bean can be roasted to different levels. A light roast, where the beans are roasted only for a short period of time, is generally mild and smooth with a fairly low acidity level. Beans that are roasted just a little bit longer create a medium-roast blend, which is one of the most popular roasts as it is balanced and appeals to almost everyone. For those individuals who like a stronger coffee, selecting beans which have been dark roasted will create a brew that is slightly bitter with a hint of smokiness in the flavor.

In addition to regular brewed coffee, there are also coffee varieties such as espresso and cappuccino. Espresso is a dark roast coffee, prepared by a special machine which brews much more quickly than a conventional coffee maker, and which uses pressure to force water through the coffee. The result is a strong shot of coffee, slightly thicker than traditional brewed coffee.

While the traditional way to enjoy espresso is as a shot, it can also be served as a latte. A latte is an espresso served with steamed milk. Another option is to enjoy a cappuccino, which is espresso, steamed milk, and foam.
Whatever form you prefer, there are plenty of coffee varieties to choose from.
